What happens to a dream deferred?

 

Does it dry up 
like a raisin in the sun? 
Or fester like a sore-- 
And then run? 
Does it stink like rotten meat? 
Or crust and sugar over-- 
like a syrupy sweet?

 

Maybe it just sags 
like a heavy load.

 

Or does it explode?

 

Deferred: 

verb (defers, deferring, deferred) [ with obj. ]

put off (an action or event) to a later time; postpone/

Raisin:

a partially dried grape.

Fester:

verb [ no obj. ]

(of a wound or sore) become septic (infected with bacteria); suppurate (formation of pus): I developed a tropical sore that festered badly | (as adj. festering) : a festering abscess.

• (of food or garbage) become rotten and offensive to the senses: a gully full of garbage that festered in the shade.

• (of a negative feeling or a problem) become worse or more intense, esp. through long-term neglect or indifference: anger which festers and grows in his heart.

• (of a person) undergo physical and mental deterioration in isolated inactivity: I might be festering in jail now.

Sore:

(of a part of one's body) painful or aching: my feet were sore and my head ached.

Stink:

Rotten:

suffering from decay: rotten eggs

Crust:

the tough outer part of a loaf of bread: a sandwich with the crusts cut off | I tore off several pieces of crust from the loaf.

• a hard, dry scrap of bread: a kindly old woman might give her a crust.

• a layer of pastry covering a pie.

• a hardened layer, coating, or deposit on the surface of something, esp. something soft: a crust of snow.

• the outermost layer of rock of which a planet consists, esp. the part of the earth above the mantle: the earth's crust | at the midocean ridge new crust is formed.

Syrupy:

having the consistency or sweetness of syrup (a thick sweet liquid made by dissolving sugar in boiling water, often used for preserving fruit): syrupy desserts.

• excessively sentimental: a particularly syrupy moment from a corny film.

Sags: To sag - 

to sink downward under weight or pressure or through lack of strength: the bed sagged in the middle 

• hang down loosely or unevenly: stockings that sagged at the knees.

Load:

a heavy thing that is being carried or is about to be carried: "in addition to their own food, they must carry a load of up to eighty pounds".

• the total number or amount that can be carried in something, esp. a vehicle of a specified type: a tractor-trailer load of new appliances.
